Job Description

Brockton Public Schools seeks Portuguese-speaking teacher for grades 6-8 who are prepared to teach, committed and passionate about a language approach to language acquisition and transforming and improving education outcomes for students.


The Unidos dual language immersion program is currently located at the Plouffe Middle School. The Unidos dual language program was launched in 2016, and our first group of students are now finishing middle school. Students have advanced Portuguese language class and Humanities instructed in Portuguese, along with a Portuguese enrichment period, while the remainder of their day is in English. Teachers are expected to use all four domains (reading, writing, speaking and listening) while integrating cultural components to enhance the experience of children in learning about Portuguese traditions, customs, and history in appropriately developmental ways for the grade levels.


We are committed to supporting each team of teachers with the appropriate curriculum, resources and strategy implementation for dual language programming. The middle school dual language programs report to the Coordinator of Classical and Modern Languages 6-12, and resources and curricula are provided.


Qualifications:

• A valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license in Portuguese 5-12.
• Academic proficiency and fluency in Portuguese
• SEI Endorsement as approved by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (preferred)
• Relative teaching experience with second language acquisition preferred
• Strong organizational skills, time-management and communication skills
• Understanding the philosophy of dual language learning and teaching
• Fulfillment of Brockton Public Schools district requirements

Responsibilities:

• Teaching advanced Portuguese language and Portuguese Humanities in target language
• Participate and collaborate in building-based and department staff meetings
• Create a positive, language rich, multicultural learning environment
• Administer and analyze student assessment data to inform planning, developing targeted instruction and making instructional decisions as related to dual language instruction
• Duties related to dual language teaching and learning and district goals for growing dual language programming.
