The Orthopaedic Physician Assistant will be an integral part of the Orthopaedic Spine Team by providing to the care of the patients and the efficiency of the system. The Physician Assistant is responsible for assisting the orthopaedic spinal surgeon in the care of persons with spinal disorders; must relate well to other people and be tolerant and considerate of their condition by understanding their anxieties and allaying their fears.

Under the supervision of the Physician the Orthopaedic Spine Physician Assistant will:

  • First assist the surgeon in the operating room, complete paperwork and the assessing of patients in between OR cases
  • See clinic patients and follow up on the numerous details associated with a clinical practice
  • Perform routine examinations and pre-operative history and physical exams, communicating with patients regarding questions, test results, MRI results, surgery, and post-operative follow-up, etc.
  • Dictate clinic notes, H&P and discharge summaries, review pre-operative studies to include CXRs, EKGs, and routine lab tests
  • Perform joint aspirations and intra-articular injections using aseptic technique
  • Perform minor surgical procedures such as pin removals, I & Ds and suturing simple lacerations
  • Perform rounds on hospital inpatients, chart their progress & report any abnormalities to supervising physician
  • Know at all times the status of key acute patients, including lab work, discharge status, etc.
  • Seek additional knowledge of spine procedures by continuing to read and study the latest journals, books and published papers, attend national spine meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Formal training which will be indicated by graduation from an accredited physician assistant program certification by the NCCPA and licensed or eligible to be licensed in the state of Colorado.
  • Prior clinical and surgical spine orthopaedic experience preferred. Required to cover call (phone calls only) with supervising physicians.
  • Current ACLS or BLS
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative to provide the best, most efficient care possible.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge and thorough understanding of the specialized practice demanding the very highest level of spine care possible.
  • Ability and desire to continue to learn and to be seen as a spine expert over time.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient or able to quickly learn the organization’s SRS and imaging systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, customers, management, medical staff, visitors and patients.
  • Appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
  • Performs all duties in a timely and efficient manner.

Physical Requirements

  • Varied activities including sitting, standing, walking, stooping, lifting, bending, and reaching.
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
  • Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Requires full range of motion in all extremities, neck and back, manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination.
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity
  • Occasional stress from workload and dealing with tense patients.
  • Must be able to use a variety of office equipment including phone, copy machine, writing instruments, PC, fax and medical equipment including stethoscope, ECG, blood pressure cuff, and cast saw equipment.
