Job Description

As a Library Assistant, you will perform skilled administrative support work in the public service areas of the library, enhancing the patron experience. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting visitors with inquiries, managing library materials, promoting programs and services, and ensuring efficient packing and shipping of materials through the NC Cardinal Consortium. Related work will be assigned as needed. Work is performed under the general direction of the Librarian.
Note: this position is located at the Main location.

Position Responsibilities


  • Provide excellent service by assisting patrons with inquiries about library services, programs, and resources.
  • Check in and check out library materials accurately; register new patrons and maintain their profiles.
  • Sort, shelve, and organize library collections; inspect the condition of books before and after check-out.
  • Collects money; prepares cash report; reconciles cash drawer; issues receipts.
  • Assist patrons with computer access, software applications, and internet navigation; provide guidance on using library technology and digital resources.
  • Help support library programs and events for all age groups.
  • Prepare materials for shipping within the NC Cardinal Consortium by following established packing guidelines.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of library operations; general knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; ability to perform library tasks and to adhere to prescribed routines; ability to perform routine clerical tasks; ability to operate standard office and computer equipment; ability to operate standard office productivity software such as Microsoft Office, ability to operate various mobile devices such as e-readers, tablets, and smart phones; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and customers.

Education, Experience, and Special Requirements

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary will be determined by candidate's qualifications, budget, market, and internal equity.

North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System
Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.

NC401k
The County contributes 1/2% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 2%.

Vacation Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases.

Sick Leave
Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.

Paid Holidays
County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary.

The County provides an Employee Assistance Program to help employees and their families with personal, family and job-related problems such as depression, substance abuse, and financial or legal concerns.
