Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000 (depending on experience and qualifications)

This is a Special Appointment position and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority (“at-will”) .

The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) supports State and local government agencies, as well as local non-profit organizations and the citizens of Maryland, by providing facilities management, real estate and surplus property services, as well as security and law enforcement for State buildings. DGS is also responsible for a full spectrum of facilities engineering, design and construction services, almost $1 billion in annual contract administration, and overseeing the State procurement process.

The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) is looking to hire a talented and experienced leader to serve as the Executive Residence Manager for Government House, located in Annapolis, Maryland.

As the Manager for the official residence of Maryland governors and First Families, an integral part of this position is to create an overall pleasant family environment for the First Family by maintaining a smooth flow of operations. The position is responsible for meeting all needs of the First Family and the guests that they invite into their home, as well as the day-to-day operations within the executive residence.

The Executive Residence Manager is classified by the State of Maryland as an “essential employee” and must therefore be available 24/7 in the event of any emergencies, unexpected issues or events.

Duties include:

  • Manage the official residence by maintaining a smooth flow of operations within Government House and meeting the needs of the First Family. Manage the Government House staff to oversee and ensure daily maintenance and upkeep of building, grounds and furnishings, all inventory records for items at Government House, security matters, all purchases for Government House, staff payroll, and master calendar of events being held. Project out any house needs and replacement items in the operational and maintenance budget for Government House.
  • Supervise and provide leadership over a staff of eleven employees (chefs, housekeepers, butlers, and administrative/operations staff). Interview and hire prospective employees.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement all events and functions held at Government House in partnership with the Governor and First Lady’s front office staff. Work along with the Executive Chef to develop menus for all events. Develop, schedule and layout event programs and brochures for public open houses, public tours and all events.
  • Serve as the Custodian of the Government House household account, responsible for monthly financial statements to the Executive Department’s Financial Administrator; receive, review and pay all household invoices, and provide accountability of funds to legislative auditors.
  • Coordinate outside events, prepare contracts and implement events at Government House. Meet with representatives to discuss guidelines and limitations as needed.
  • Oversee all contractual arrangements with State agencies and outside organizations hosting events at the facility. Meet with representatives to discuss guidelines and limitations as needed (invitations, food service, floral arrangements, entertainment, additional staff, programs, etc.).

Required & Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience overseeing operations and business for a large facility or residence is required .
  • Experience in planning and coordinating logistics for large events is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in Hospitality, Hotel or Facility Operations, or Office Management is preferred.
  • Demonstrated work experience with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Ability to work flexible and overtime hours as needed, to include days/evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation.
  • Financial or accounting background is preferred.
  • Ability to work well under stressful situations to meet deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with customers and people at various levels within the organization, including top executives.
  • A strong work ethic, self-motivation towards excellent job performance, and the ability and desire to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills, with a proven history of working effectively with multiple stakeholders across various departments.
