Chief Operating Engineer

Job Scope:

Reporting to the Maintenance and Reliability Manager, this position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all plant utilities and electromechanical systems. The Chief Operating Engineer ensures compliance with regulatory standards and optimizes the functionality of steam boilers, refrigeration systems, air compressors, HVAC, wastewater treatment, and other critical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee the safe and efficient operation of all plant utilities, including steam boilers, refrigeration, cooling tower, wastewater treatment (DAF), air compressors, HVAC/heating systems, ensuring compliance with TSSA/ESA standards.
• Supervise shift engineers and ensure proper logbook maintenance and adherence to regulatory requirements.
• Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance systems to maximize equipment reliability and efficiency.
• Identify and execute continuous improvement initiatives related to plant operations, utility management, and energy efficiency.
• Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and food manufacturing regulations (e.g., GMP, HACCP, WHMIS, MSDS).
• Work closely with contractors and vendors to ensure all outsourced maintenance and engineering work meets industry standards and safety regulations.
• Provide technical expertise and support for capital projects assigned by the Maintenance and Reliability Manager.
• Assist senior management in developing and managing budgets for plant utilities and capital expenditures.
• Participate as an active member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
• Attend required training and professional development courses to stay current with industry regulations and best practices.
• Other projects and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

• Certified 2nd Class Operating Engineer Certificate as per TSSA requirements.
• Minimum of two (2) – three (3) years’ experience working in a related position within the food/ beverage industry is required
• Educational background in mechanical or engineering technology (diploma or degree), coupled with a Millwright and/or Electrician license (or equivalent) is considered an asset
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
• Must display excellent sanitary habits and possess knowledge of HACCP
• Strong preventative maintenance and troubleshooting ability
• Solid knowledge of high speed filling and packaging lines and PLCs 
• Knowledge of GMPs
• Familiar with continuous improvement processes and methodologies considered an asset
• Must have trade license such as Industrial Electrician License and/or Millwright License
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Must be flexible in terms of shift work and perform other duties as required
• Physically capable of performing the demands of the job
• Computer skills would be an asset

Working Environment:

Frequent exposure to humid/dry temperatures, multiple deadlines and interruptions. Regular exposure to dust, extreme temperature inadequate lighting, ventilation, noise and odour. Occasional exposure to hazardous machines, chemical substances and working from heights, frequent business travel to other facilities required.

Physical Demands:

Sitting, standing, and walking for considerable amount of time. Climbing stairs, crouching and working in awkward positions for moderate lengths of time.
